Frank Gruber Creator, Somewhat Frank & Product Manager at AOL |
November 2nd, 2008 |
In this post, Frank Gruber - the creator of the wildly popular Somewhat Frank video blog and series of Tech Cocktail events around the US - talks about how he has built his personal brand while working as a product manager for AOL. His story shows how having a personality as an individual while keeping your day job can be a great career move, as well as good for the business that you work for.
Being faceless doesn't work anymore.
The Personality Project is an online collaboration to uncover the many ways that personality matters for brands and individuals to stand out. The site is inspired by the new marketing book Personality Not Included.

1Cheers for the video, I think the best thing to take away from it is you need to hustle to be in this space.

2Really nice and useful video. It had almost changed my way of thinking about myself. I can actually think of being a successful person. I wish I could have something so informative in such a lighter simple manner little more early. Then I would have been more close to my targets… though it seems too long! Well done.

3Hmm… great food for thought. Frank’s success somewhat reminds me of Matt Cutts, who’s able to build his personal branding despite the fact he’s working for Google. Thanks for the video, good stuff.

5Great video. One person I don’t see on this list is Gary Vaynerchuk (at least I don’t see him on the right side from 1 to 23). He’s taken his family’s wine business and put it on steroids all through his personality.
He’s an over the top in your face kind of guy - that’s the impression I have - but I love that. Very memorable.
Of course his business didn’t go through the roof just because of the personality behind it, but it definitely played a major role.

6This is a very inspiring video. What really inspired me is when he said that being good at something is not measured on how long you have been doing it, but how good you are at it.

8Indeed. The synergy between bookmarking, video webcasting, and branding a catchy title/brand can be very powerful indeed.

9I think all of us are used to working hard as the only way to achieve our professional development. Personal branding should be to be our goal to get our self positioning. Otherwise will keep on just being ‘faceless people’, generic products on the HR shelf.
